About Capbreton · Le Santocha

Capbreton is a harbour town on the Landes-Basque coast of southwest France, where the Landes shoreline bends south towards the Spanish border. Le Santocha is the beach directly south of the harbour mouth — a stretch of exposed Atlantic sand facing WSW, open to whatever the Bay of Biscay is sending. Getting there is uncomplicated. Capbreton is well-connected along the Atlantic coast and the harbour entrance is the obvious landmark. Le Santocha begins just south of it. Parking is available near the beach but fills quickly when conditions are drawing surfers and riders out. The usable wind arc runs from 170° to 350° — south through west to north — and the WSW-facing beach means SW and W winds arrive over open ocean with nothing blocking them. Those directions also drive Atlantic swell into the beach, which is exactly the recipe this spot runs on. Le Santocha is an expert wave-kiteboarding spot, and it is worth being clear about that upfront. The Gouf de Capbreton — a deep submarine canyon — cuts close to shore south of the harbour mouth. Its presence shapes how incoming swell behaves at the surface. Sets arriving from the SW and W can be inconsistent in size and interval; waves that look manageable from the beach can rear up and steepen quickly. Experienced wave riders will approach this ocean with respect. Those still developing their skills in powerful surf may be caught out. Autumn and winter are the prime season. Atlantic depression systems from the SW-W deliver consistent swell and solid winds — this is when Le Santocha fires. A clean SW groundswell with a W wind component can produce powerful, well-shaped conditions for wave-kiteboarding. Sessions are physical and unforgiving if you arrive underprepared. Launch south of the harbour mouth, keeping a clear margin from the harbour structure and any vessel traffic. The beach is shared with surfers — this is surf territory first — so managing spacing and right of way is part of riding here. Be visible, be predictable, and communicate on the water. For local support, Adishats Surf School, Alizé Arnaud Surf School, and Cactus école de surf are all based in the Capbreton area. If you are unfamiliar with how the Gouf influences conditions at this spot, a session with one of them is time well spent.
