Hossegor's Plage des Culs Nuls sits on the Landes coast of southwest France, a stretch of raw Atlantic beach that has earned a global reputation among wave riders. The beach faces the open ocean, receiving the full force of W-NW swells that march in from deep water and detonate on the sandbars as powerful, hollow beach-break waves. This is the same coastline that hosts the WSL professional surf competition — the ocean here doesn't dial it back for kiters. Getting to the spot is straightforward: Hossegor is a well-known surf town and the beach is easily accessible from the centre. The challenge begins once you're on the sand. The shore-break here can be heavy; launching and landing in anything beyond calm conditions takes real experience and demands full attention. Rip currents are a regular feature of this beach, running along and between the sandbars. They shift with tide and swell, so reading the water before you step into the kite is not optional — it's basic safety. The wind arc runs from south through west to north. For a west-facing Atlantic beach, this covers the dominant W-NW directions that fill in with Atlantic fronts, giving side-onshore to onshore conditions. This is wave-kite territory, full stop. The conditions reward riders who can work with swell, read incoming sets, position themselves in the break, and handle themselves when things go sideways — because here they can. Expert level is the honest minimum. If you're still building confidence in waves or shore-break, there are better spots to do that before coming here. Autumn into winter is when Hossegor turns up the volume. Atlantic storm systems through October and into February drive the biggest swells and the most powerful conditions. Outside storm season the waves can ease off, but the shore-break and rip currents remain year-round features. Whatever the swell, respect the ocean here. For instruction or local knowledge, both Kitesurf Landes Kitesurfing School and ESCF Hossegor / Darrigood Surf School operate locally. A conversation with someone on the ground before your first session here is worth more than any online forecast. After a session, the options are solid. Bar Saint Antoine, Dick's Sand Bar, and L'Etiquette take care of post-session drinks. Baraketa and Chez Loulou are local restaurants for a proper meal. If you're spending more than a day, Hôtel Océan, L'Hôtel de la Plage, and Koala Surf House all sit nearby. Plage des Culs Nuls is one of those spots you remember. The waves are real, the ocean is powerful, and on a good autumn swell with the right skills this is world-class wave kiting.
