Saint-Colomban sits on a sheltered bay on the southern coast of the Morbihan peninsula, a short drive from the town of Carnac — home to some of the most remarkable Neolithic standing stone alignments in the world. The kitesurfing here takes place on a SW-facing beach that catches westerly winds funnelling across the bay while remaining largely shielded from the raw Atlantic swell that hammers the exposed Breton coastline to the west. The kite zone is kept separate from the bathing area, which makes this a workable spot even on busier days. The bay configuration means the water stays relatively calm — sheltered enough for beginners to build confidence without the chaos of exposed coastal conditions, but with enough wind to keep things interesting when the westerlies fill in. Winds from the SW through W and into the NW sit squarely within the usable 135°–315° arc, so a good onshore breeze across the bay is the typical session here. Tides matter at Saint-Colomban. The spot works best from mid-tide down to low tide, when more beach is exposed and the launch area opens up properly. At high tide the usable space can tighten significantly, so it's worth checking local tide tables before you head out — Morbihan tides can have a meaningful range, and the water character shifts noticeably with the cycle. This looks like an all-levels spot when conditions are right. The sheltered water and separated kite zone give beginners a manageable environment to learn, while the bay can still throw up enough wind to keep experienced riders satisfied on a solid westerly day. There's no obvious technical challenge to the water itself, but tidal awareness and reading the wind direction correctly are the two things to keep in mind. On-site support is solid. Avelkite Carnac runs a kitesurfing and wing foil school right at the spot, so lessons and gear hire are accessible without having to travel far. Kite Spirit Kitesurfing School, based over at Quiberon, is another option in the area if you want a different teaching environment or a change of scenery. For staying over, the area covers a range of options: Hôtel La Licorne and Hôtel Restaurant Brasserie Les Rochers for hotel stays, Chez Joseph — Gîtes de France and Ker Rosarm — Gîtes de France for self-catered accommodation. After your session, Kreiz An Avel and La Calypso are nearby restaurants, and Ets Stephan handles the bar and café side. Beyond the kiting itself, Carnac's megalithic alignments are genuinely worth making time for. Thousands of prehistoric menhirs stretch across the landscape just inland from the coast — not many kite spots in the world sit next to something like that. If you're making a multi-day trip, build in time to visit.
