About Erdeven · Kerhillio

Kerhillio is a long, west-facing Atlantic beach on the southern Morbihan coast, stretching roughly eight kilometres between the dunes of Erdeven and the headlands that bookend this stretch of Brittany. The beach sits open to the ocean with nothing between you and the Americas, which is exactly why the Atlantic westerlies show up here with such regularity throughout the season. Getting there: Erdeven is a small town a short drive inland; follow signs toward Plage de Kerhillio. Parking sits in the dunes at the beach access points — arrive early in July and August if you want a spot without a hike. The kite zone is marked at the south end of the beach, which keeps you clear of the main bathing areas and gives you a clean corridor to the water. SW to W winds come in onshore here, meaning you get powered, consistent water with a comfortable upwind margin. These are typically the more accessible sessions — the sea state tends to be manageable and the direction gives you room to work. NW shifts the dynamic: the wind becomes sideshore from the port side, the swell organises into proper Atlantic sets, and the riding character changes entirely. Strong NW is where experienced riders show up looking for waves. For beginners, SW conditions are the entry point. The school presence here backs that up — Kite Spirit Kitesurfing School And Wing Surf Du Morbihan and Kitesurfing School Brittany Dream De Glisse Ste Barbe both operate in the area, so lessons and supervised first sessions are genuinely accessible. The beach is wide and sandy with a gradual entry, which is forgiving for self-rescues and getting in and out cleanly. The dune line gives you a reasonable spot to rig, though onshore conditions mean you'll want to be deliberate about your upwind edge and have a clear exit plan sorted before you launch. Season runs April through October. The shoulder months — April, May, September, October — can bring unpredictable Atlantic weather, but also thinner crowds and excellent pressure windows. July and August are reliable but busy; you'll share water space and beach. After your session, Camping Kerzerho (four-star) is right in the area if you're staying over, with Le TY Resto on site. For food, Crêperie "Les Ganivelles" and L'even bar et restaurant Erdeven are solid local options, along with Bar-Tabac "Les Menhirs" and La Grange. Camping Megalith and Club & Résidence 3 Étoiles Keravel round out the accommodation picture for longer stays. Brittany is not the Caribbean. Bring a wetsuit even mid-summer, and treat the Atlantic with respect — conditions can shift faster than the forecast suggests. But when the westerlies are running and Kerhillio is working, this is a proper European kite beach that earns its reputation.
