About Carnon · Petit Travers

Carnon Petit Travers occupies a southeast-facing strip of barrier beach between Montpellier and the Mediterranean, part of the long coastal ribbon that separates the city's lagoons from open water. Montpellier is close enough that this is the natural home spot for the local kite community — an established venue with multiple schools, clear zone markings, and riders who know the conditions. This is not a remote find; it is a functional, well-used kite beach. The beach is divided into three designated kite zones: Le 74, Petit Travers, and Roquilles. That structure matters on the water. Summer brings restrictions to some or all of these areas, alongside a large influx of non-kiting beach visitors. Spring and autumn are when Carnon is properly at its best — better zone access, more consistent wind, and a crowd that is actually there to ride. Wind-wise, the usable kite window runs from 45° through to 215°. Southeast to southwest winds blow onshore here, keeping the water relatively flat and the conditions forgiving. These are good days for technique practice, flat-water freestyle, or anyone who prefers cleaner, more manageable conditions without swell to factor in. The onshore southerly portion of that window is where conditions are most predictable for most riders. The Tramontane is the other half of the story, and it deserves respect. A northwesterly that builds to 25–40 knots on strong days, it arrives side-offshore on this beach — which means power, gusty conditions, and a real need to manage your upwind return. If you are not confident self-rescuing and body-dragging upwind, Tramontane days are not the days to experiment in open water. For intermediates and above who know their limits, it can deliver punchy, powerful sessions. Linking up with one of the local schools for a briefing before you head out is always worthwhile. Alan Wind&Surf School Traveling and B&Bob Kiteboarding both operate in the area, covering kite, wing, foil, windsurf, and surf disciplines. B&Bob operates specifically across Montpellier and its surrounding beaches, giving them solid local knowledge of conditions and zone rules. For food, El Fuego, Arena Pizza, Coeur des Sables, and au ch'ti panini are all within reach of the beach. Accommodation nearby includes Hôtel de la plage, Hôtel Le Petit Baigneur, Hôtel Le Brasilia, and Hôtel Plage Palace & Spa. Come in spring or autumn. Zone access improves, the wind is more consistent, and you are not competing for rigging and launch space with the summer crowd.
