Étang de Berre is one of western Europe's largest coastal lagoons — a broad sheet of salt water tucked behind Marseille on the Provence coast. Le Jaï sits on the lagoon's southern shore near Marignane, close enough to Marseille-Provence Airport that you'll notice the flight path overhead. It's a minor detail against the backdrop of flat Provençal light and near-daily wind. Access to the beach at Le Jaï is straightforward, and the launch area is wide enough to rig without much drama. The lagoon's geography does most of the work: the first hundred metres of water are shallow enough to stand in, which is why this place has built a genuine reputation as one of the more beginner-friendly spots in southern France. Multiple kite operators are based here, so instruction and rental are easy to arrange on site. The predominant summer wind comes from the southwest, typically running around 15–20 knots — reliable enough that cancelled sessions are the exception rather than the rule. Wind is virtually guaranteed on most days, and the spot operates year-round. When the wind swings northwest, it kicks up chop that can reach around a metre, so conditions feel livelier than the lagoon setting might suggest. East-southeast winds run offshore and the water surface goes genuinely flat — those are the sessions to chase if you're working on freestyle moves or just want smooth water. The usable kite window covers east through south to west (90°–270°), giving you a decent range of workable directions across different weather patterns. For beginner and intermediate riders, the mix of shallow entry, reliable wind, and enclosed lagoon water makes Le Jaï a solid progression spot. There are no open-ocean swells to manage, and the shallow zone reduces the stakes of a failed water start. More experienced riders tend to pick northwest days for the chop, or time visits around the flat-water windows to push harder tricks. On the facilities side, there's a reasonable spread within reach.
