Plage du Cavaou sits at the edge of Fos-sur-Mer, a working port city at the western end of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The Gulf of Fos creates a natural bay here, and the Cavaou beach occupies a sheltered pocket that catches reliable wind across a wide arc — 110° through 290°, covering SE, south, and W exposures. The Mistral, that defining force of Provençal weather, also pushes through this corridor when it runs, giving the spot a genuinely year-round character. The industrial backdrop is worth knowing about upfront. Port infrastructure and industrial facilities are visible from the beach — this is not the polished Côte d'Azur scene. What it is, though, is a functional spot with consistent wind and a geography that delivers conditions riders can count on. The water is shallow and the beach is sheltered — two things that matter considerably if you're learning or want to put in clean technique work without fighting the conditions. Walk out and the bottom stays close for a good stretch, which keeps things forgiving. Conditions can sit flat and mellow when the wind is from the SE or W; the Mistral tends to push harder and generate more chop, so read the forecast before you size up. The launch area is sheltered enough that rigging and self-launching are generally straightforward. Two kite schools operate here. GlissAcademy runs a full programme — kitesurfing, wingfoil, and kitefoil — and carries the kind of site-specific knowledge that only comes from coaching on the same beach over time. Le Roc also operates in the area. Between the two, there's solid on-the-water support if you need instruction or just a local read on the day's conditions. After sessions, the beach strip has several options for food: 3.14 Beach restaurant, Brasserie le QG, Cabanes du port, and LE SAUDADE. Accommodation runs from Camping Municipal Bottaï — a three-star campsite that's practical if you're travelling with gear and want to stay a few days — through to Beach House, CALYPSO, and HOTEL RESIDENCE LES AIGUADES for those who prefer a room. For anyone focused on progression — building kite hours, picking up wingfoiling, or working on kitefoil technique in manageable flat water — Cavaou makes a strong argument. The combination of reliable year-round wind, shallow forgiving water, and on-site instruction in multiple disciplines is rare. The industrial setting is the trade-off, and most riders who make the trip find it's worth it.
