Étang de Thau is France's second largest coastal lagoon — 7,500 hectares of shallow, sheltered water sitting just inland from the Mediterranean coast at Sète in Occitanie. Pont-Levis is one of several launch points distributed around the lagoon's perimeter, part of a kite-zone network that makes this place unusually versatile: wherever the wind swings, there's typically a spot on the shoreline that works. The lagoon is famous locally for two things — oysters and flat water. The oyster beds cover much of the lake floor, so you'll want to stick to designated kiting zones; the markers are there for a reason. Outside those zones, the riding surface is as smooth as you'll find in southern France: protected from swell, with no real fetch to build chop. It's ideal for foiling, freestyle, and anyone who wants to work on technique without getting bounced around. Two regional winds drive the action here. The Tramontane blows from the northwest, typically the stronger of the two, and is the wind most kiters associate with Étang de Thau. The Marin comes from the southeast and tends to be warmer and lighter. The lagoon's geometry means that with multiple launch spots distributed around its perimeter, both winds are workable — you just need to know which side of the lake to set up on. Flat water is the constant; the wind direction determines your access point. Pont-Levis itself sits along the lagoon's edge, accessible from the road network around Sète. The area is compact and functional rather than scenic resort territory — this is a working fishing and oyster-farming lagoon, and the vibe reflects that. You're here to ride, not to photograph a postcard backdrop.
