Étang de Vic sits in the Languedoc littoral zone southwest of Frontignan, wedged between the bustle of Sète and the spread of Montpellier — a shallow saltwater lagoon that the kite crowd has quietly claimed for itself. It's a different animal from the open Mediterranean beaches nearby: think glassy, flat water with a lagoon-specific wind dynamic and multiple access points around the étang's perimeter. Getting there is straightforward. Frontignan is well-connected by road, and parking is generally available near the lagoon access points. The étang is enclosed enough that you're not fighting heavy beach traffic — it has a more utilitarian, session-focused feel than the tourist strips along the Med. Multiple launch points ring the lagoon, so you can pick your access based on the day's wind direction. The two main wind engines here are the Tramontane — a northwest wind that comes cross-onshore from the beach side — and the Marin, a southerly to south-southeast sea breeze. Both drive workable conditions on the flat water inside. The lagoon's geometry means you're rarely dealing with choppy open-water swell; it stays calm inside regardless of what's happening out at sea. The water is shallow and salt, which matters for beginners: body drags and unexpected drops are less punishing than on deeper open water. Flat conditions make it a natural progression ground — if you're moving from first lessons toward riding consistently upwind, this is the kind of place where you can put in deliberate practice without getting beaten up. That said, shallow water has its own quirks. In places the lagoon barely covers your ankles, which is fine for walking out but means fin strikes are a real consideration if you're on a board with any draft. Know your gear's clearance before you session here. The season typically runs April through October. Summer brings the classic Med thermal pattern — building through the afternoon — while spring and autumn can offer cleaner, less-crowded windows. For instruction the area is well-served: Id Kite Mèze - School De Kitesurf Et De Wing Foil and Id Kite Sète both operate in the region, alongside Kite Premium - School De Kitesurf. Linking up with one of them first is worth it if you want a local briefing on which launch suits the day. On the food front there's genuine variety — Bistrot Fusion, Brasserie des Sens, Chez Lînette, De l'os à l'arête, and Eden Pizza all serve the area.
