Fort-Mahon-Plage is a small seaside town on the Opal Coast in Hauts-de-France, northern France. The kite spot — Plage Nord — sits at the northern tip of the Marquenterre beach, a 17-kilometre stretch of open coast that runs south from here. The beach faces west, exposed to a wide wind arc from south-southwest through north (190°–10°), so the prevailing SW-to-NW winds arrive as onshore or side-onshore conditions. That's a genuinely useful window for consistent sessions. The kite zone sits north of the Nautical Base dike — a clear, unmissable landmark that divides club infrastructure from rider space. Find the dike, walk north, and you're in your area. It keeps things clean and unambiguous. Launch is from a wide, flat beach backed by sand dunes. Those dunes aren't just scenery: they channel and accelerate the wind as it crosses the shoreline, so expect gusts with noticeably more punch than the forecast reading suggests. Factor that into your kite choice — the dune effect here is consistent, not random. At low tide the beach is generous; there's room to rig, lay out lines, and self-launch without crowding anyone. As the tide comes in the beach narrows and the launch corridor tightens. Checking local tide tables before you rig is basic housekeeping — not optional. On the water, expect short punchy coastal chop. There's solid room for freeriding and progression work in the shallower sections near shore. The spot is tagged intermediate, and that reads correctly: conditions aren't extreme, but the dune-driven wind acceleration and tide-dependent beach layout mean you want reliable water starts and confident kite control before you show up solo. Year-round riding is possible. Northern French winters are properly cold though — full winter wetsuit, boots, gloves, and a hood are the sensible call, not a suggestion. Getting there is uncomplicated. Fort-Mahon has beach parking and the kite zone is a straightforward walk north from the main beachfront past the Nautical Base. For overnight trips: Camping Le Bois Dormant and Camping le Royon are both in the area for camping; Hôtel du Cheval Blanc covers hotel accommodation. Post-session, CIVETTE THE BEACH, Côté Bistro, and L'Alcyone handle sit-down meals. Fahrenheit's Pub and L'Amandine are the relaxed options for a drink or a quick bite.
