About Lac de Hourtin-Carcans

Lac de Hourtin-Carcans sits in the Landes pine forest of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, roughly 15 kilometres from the Atlantic coast. At 5,500 hectares it's France's largest natural freshwater lake — a serious expanse of water with enough fetch to generate real conditions while staying far calmer than the open ocean beaches nearby. That combination of scale and shelter is exactly what draws kiters here. The kite zone is on the north shore near Hourtin-Port, clearly marked by yellow buoys. A prefectural decree governs the area, so staying within the designated zones isn't optional — the buoys define where you ride. The upside is that the spot is well-managed and the water stays relatively uncrowded compared to the Atlantic breaks further west. Getting set up is straightforward. Hourtin-Port has parking right on the waterfront, and accommodation options include Aire de camping-cars d'Hourtin-Port, Camping les Écureuils, and Le Village Western a short distance away. Book early if you're coming in July or August — the whole Médoc lake district fills up fast. For food and drinks after a session, the port cluster delivers: La Brasserie du Port, La Marina, La Pêcherie, Le Café du Port, Le Drakkar, Le Galion, and Le Rond Point Gourmand are all within easy reach of the water. Wind comes predominantly from the SW to NW — Atlantic pressure systems pushing through the gap between the coast and the Landes forest. Summer brings thermal winds that typically run 10–20 knots: consistent, predictable, and genuinely learner-friendly. From September into October the character of the spot shifts considerably. Atlantic depressions can push gusts to 35–40 knots on the stronger systems. That's a different kind of riding altogether — keep an eye on the forecast and size accordingly. The usable wind arc runs from west through north to east (270°–90°), so SW, W, NW, and N winds all put you on the water. Pure easterlies can work too, though they're less frequent in this part of France. Southerly winds fall outside the usable window. The water itself is the real selling point. Freshwater lake means no tide, no shore break, and a flat surface that holds even in moderate wind. For beginners working on upwind technique, intermediates drilling transitions, or anyone learning to jump without committing to open ocean swell, the conditions here are close to ideal. The flatness lets you focus on technique rather than survival. That said, don't underestimate the autumn window. A manageable 20-knot lake session can become a 38-knot reality quickly as depressions push in from the Atlantic. If there's any doubt about the forecast, go smaller on the kite. In short: freshwater, flat, regulated, and genuinely good for building skills.
