Le Crotoy occupies the north bank of the Baie de Somme entrance, a vast tidal estuary cutting into the Hauts-de-France coastline. The bay is one of France's largest tidal bays, and that scale works in a kiteboarder's favour: at low water the retreating tide exposes enormous sandbanks and shallow flats that produce consistently flat, lightly textured water — the kind that makes progression work genuinely rewarding rather than a battle against chop. The kite zone here is officially designated, sitting outside the nature reserve boundary that protects most of the bay. That matters: the Baie de Somme is a significant wildlife area, and launching from the wrong spot will get you in trouble fast. Stick to the marked kite zone on the north side and you're clear. Wind-wise, Le Crotoy does well on anything from south-southwest through to north-northeast — a wide usable arc that covers the dominant NW-to-SW patterns typical of this stretch of northern France. Those Atlantic westerly and northwesterly systems that sweep up the Channel arrive with decent consistency, particularly from May through August and again in the October-to-January window. Outside those peaks the spot can run light or patchy, though it's always worth a check when a solid Atlantic low is tracking through. The tidal range here is extreme — the Somme estuary ranks among the most dramatic in France. This is the single most important thing to understand before you drive here. Arrive at the wrong state of tide and there's no water: just exposed sand and mud stretching to the horizon. Plan your session around the tide tables, not the other way around. The sandbanks that deliver beautiful flat water on a rising tide can leave you stranded — or more dangerously, cut off by fast-moving channels — if you're not watching the clock. Study the tides before you rig, identify your exit clearly, and build in margin. For intermediate riders this is a genuinely rewarding destination. The flat water suits progression riding — freestyle basics, toeside, jump practice without a chop tax. Beginners should approach cautiously: the tidal complexity adds a layer of situational awareness that takes experience to manage safely. After a session the village delivers well on food. Restaurant du Port and Les Canotiers sit close to the harbour; A l'Estacade, Auberge de la Marine, La Côte d'Opale, and Le Jules Verne cover the sit-down end of the spectrum. Le P'tit Ridin and La Bonne Franquette II are solid options for something more relaxed, and Bar de L'Amicale handles the post-session drink. Le Crotoy is a working seaside town with real infrastructure — not a remote sandbar you drive two hours to find empty.
