The island connects to the mainland by bridge, and the kiting action concentrates at that southern end, where the beach opens up to face directly west. That west-facing orientation defines the riding here. Southeast winds — at around 17 knots they produce flat, cross-shore water — are the conditions most riders come for. The surface stays manageable, the direction is honest, and if you're here to build skills or sharpen technique, this is the configuration that rewards the investment. Trim runs feel purposeful, upwind tracking is testable, and there's room to actually think about what you're doing rather than just hang on. The other side of the coin is west and southwest wind, which arrives with Atlantic depressions. That's when the swell comes in off the open ocean and Barbâtre becomes a different spot entirely — wave-friendly, with more power in the water and more to manage on launch and landing. Both versions are real and worth planning for. Three designated learning zones sit near the bridge, which is an unusual level of organisation for a beach launch and one that pays off immediately. Riders know where they're supposed to be, beginners get appropriate water without the stress of sharing with advanced riders pushing the limits, and the overall safety picture is cleaner for it. A kite school operates on site, covering instruction, gear, and rescue — the kind of on-the-ground resource that matters when conditions shift unexpectedly. The wind window runs from south through west to north (180°–0°), a generous arc that keeps the spot viable across spring, summer, and into autumn. The shoulder seasons tend to deliver the most consistent pressure patterns with the least crowd pressure on the beach. Punta Lara, the on-site restaurant, handles food and post-session recovery. For anything more specific — where the tide is sitting, which zone is reading well on today's wind — the kite school is the right first call. Atlantic beaches shift significantly with the tide; what looks like a wide launch at low water can close down as the tide fills. Build time into your arrival, read the beach before you rig, and use the designated zones. They carry local knowledge encoded into their layout. From the mainland, the bridge road brings you to the island's southern end. Keep the bridge as your landmark and you're in the right area. Rig back from the waterline, walk your kit down, and get your bearing on the zones before you commit to the water.
