Saint-Aygulf sits at the western end of the Gulf of Fréjus, tucked into a gently curving bay on the Var coast of Provence. The beach is broad golden sand facing roughly south-southeast into the Mediterranean — which means the useful wind arc runs from east-northeast through south to west-southwest (75°–255°). Anything outside that window pushes you offshore, and the Mistral, which funnels in from the northwest, does exactly that when it arrives. Getting there by car is straightforward; the beach is signposted from the coastal road connecting Fréjus and Sainte-Maxime. Parking sits close to the sand but fills quickly in July and August. In peak summer, arriving early in the morning makes a real difference — a long walk with a bar bag in full afternoon heat is nobody's idea of a warm-up. The launch area is open sand, easy to rig on, but the beach gets genuinely busy with swimmers and sunbathers through the summer months. Keep your downwind clear and stay switched on about who is in the water around you. The spot's SSE orientation gives you the best of the Mediterranean summer thermal cycle. From June through September, the afternoon sea breeze builds as the land heats up, typically filling in from the south and southeast quadrant. The protected bay keeps conditions calmer close to shore — well-suited for beginners getting comfortable with water starts, or lighter days when you want to cruise. Further out, as the breeze fills in properly, you get short punchy chop rather than long Atlantic swells, which suits a freer riding style without full surf conditions. The Mistral is the headline hazard. It arrives from the northwest, outside the usable kite window, and anything on the water on a Mistral day faces a fast offshore exit. A northwest wind forecast is a no-go signal here, not a starting point for negotiation. For facilities, La Kabane Plage covers beach-bar duties right on the sand. For post-session food, several restaurants sit nearby: L'Émeraude, Ocean Drive, Le Central, La Tarantella, Kokonut, and Le caractere. The whole area is a working summer resort, so food and shade are never far. For kit, the sheltered bay can feel lighter than open-coast spots on the same forecast day — bringing one size up from your usual call is rarely wasted here. The spot suits all levels when conditions cooperate, and is at its most relaxed in the shoulder months either side of the peak rush, when the beach has room to breathe and the summer thermals are still running. Saint-Aygulf is a proper Mediterranean beach session: turquoise water, golden sand, reliable summer wind, and good food waiting when you come in. Respect the Mistral forecast and the rest takes care of itself.
