About Snowkite Markstein

Markstein sits on the high ridge of the Hautes-Vosges, the mountain spine that runs along the Alsace-Lorraine border in eastern France. High on the plateau, the open snowfields around the Markstein ski area provide the wind-exposed terrain that snowkite riders look for — a genuine mountain kite venue in a region far better known for its vineyards and the Rhine valley below. This is not a water spot. The kite stays the same; underfoot you're on skis or a snowboard, and your riding surface is snow rather than water. That changes the session considerably — snow is faster and less forgiving than water, mountain terrain introduces hazards that flat-water riding doesn't prepare you for, and Vosges weather is mountain weather: it shifts fast and can close in without much warning. The appeal, once you've felt it, is hard to argue with. The plateau gives space, the kite gives power, and in the right conditions the two work together in a way that's hard to replicate anywhere else. Getting here means a mountain road drive up from the Alsace plain. Winter road conditions apply — check the forecast before heading up and come prepared with appropriate tyres or chains. Parking is available at the ski resort area. The approach is straightforward once you're climbing out of the valley. The Snowkite Markstein kite school operates on site, which matters more here than at most spots. Snowkiting has a real learning curve even for experienced water kiters. The dynamics are different, the surface is less forgiving, and the mountain environment adds complexity that deserves respect. Having qualified instruction available on location removes a significant barrier to entry and adds a meaningful safety margin. The surrounding area is well-served for a mountain day. Nearby restaurants include Auberge du Steinlebach, Ferme Auberge du Hahnenbrunnen, Ferme-Auberge du Treh, Hôtel Wolf, Le Tremplin, and 1183 table de caractère. For drinks, Bar Bichettes and La Bulle cover the bar and café angle. For a mountain venue, that's a genuinely solid spread. Use mountain weather forecasts rather than coastal wind models — the Hautes-Vosges plateau runs to its own patterns. Conditions are seasonal and winter-specific; adequate snow cover is required before the plateau is rideable. The site can be cold and exposed. For riders who understand the mountain environment — or who are ready to learn it through the school — Markstein delivers something genuinely different from any water kite spot in Alsace.
