Shallow lagoon and pink-sand tidal island at the south-west corner of Crete, protected by a reef that keeps the water flat inside. The northwest Ionian wind arrives directly side-on across the lagoon making it the calmest, most beginner-friendly kite area on Crete. Typical summer wind 15–20 kt (Force 4–5 Beaufort), reinforced by afternoon thermal. Access via the eastern beach from the car park; the lagoon crossing to the islet is waded at low water. Season May–October; July–August peak.
About Elafonisi
Elafonisi is an island located close to the southwestern corner of the Mediterranean island of Crete, of which it is administratively a part, in the municipality of Kissamos of the regional unit of Chania. When the weather is fine it is possible to walk to the island through the shallow water. The island is a protected nature reserve.
