In practice, when a strong north is running, the more sheltered small bay close to the port tends to offer cleaner air and a more manageable launch than the open beach — local riders use it to step away from the worst of the mountain turbulence. Winter and spring sessions on south or south-westerly winds are generally the more approachable option: longer fetch, a more predictable gradient wind, and a beach that is not yet crowded with summer swimmers. The swell that comes with those conditions adds texture to the riding; when the angle is right you can pick up proper downwind runs. The beach is well set up for a kite trip. In south-westerlies the picture is calmer, though swell can make water re-entries trickier if you misjudge your kite size.
