About Kalavarda (Rhodes)

Kalavarda sits on the west coast of Rhodes, about 28 km southwest of Rhodes city and just south of Fanes. The beach faces west-northwest into open Mediterranean water and catches the Meltemi from the north-northwest — the classic Aegean summer thermal that arrives side-onshore and typically runs 15 to 20 knots on a good day. Season runs June through September, broadly similar to the northern spots at Fanes and Kremasti, though Kalavarda draws a noticeably quieter crowd. Getting here from Rhodes town means a straightforward run down the west coast road to the village of Kalavarda. The launch is on open sand with a sandy bottom and a shallow, gradual entry — easy to wade in and out of, and forgiving for riders still working on water re-launches. Rig up on the beach; there's space to set lines without crowding. The wind arc covers 190° to 10°, and the Meltemi's north-northwest direction sits comfortably inside that window. The combination of consistent side-onshore airflow, sandy bottom, and shallow entry makes Kalavarda a natural fit for beginners and lower intermediates. Two kite schools operate on-site: Kite Kalavarda and Meltemi Kiteboarding, both offering instruction whether you're working through a full course or just want a guided session before you go solo. For more experienced riders, a consistent 15 to 20 knots of Meltemi is solid freeride territory with room to work. The wind can vary beyond the typical range, so check conditions before you launch and don't assume the morning holds through the afternoon. The beach sees swimmers during the busiest summer weeks — keep your kite clear of the swimming zone on the way in. Facilities on the ground are solid. Kalavarda's appeal comes down to what it isn't: overcrowded, over-commercialized, or overrun. You get a proper kite beach with consistent summer wind, two real kite schools, and enough infrastructure to eat and sleep on-site — just without the noise of the bigger northern spots. A sensible base for beginners on a course, and a low-drama day-trip option for experienced riders who want uncrowded water.
