Kaminia Beach sits in Mounda Bay on the southern tip of Kefalonia, one of the larger Ionian islands. The bay faces broadly south-southwest, which means the summer thermal wind — typically a steady southwest-to-west sea breeze — blows directly onto the beach. It usually fills in after 14:00 and runs through the afternoon, building to around 15-20 knots on a solid day. The spot itself is about as beginner-friendly as it gets: a sandy beach backed by shallow, flat water that stays manageable right through the riding area. That combination — reliable afternoon thermal, flat water, and a gentle entry — makes it one of the more forgiving setups in the Ionian. Beginners can spend a full afternoon here without fighting the conditions; intermediates get a clean training ground to work on technique without the added stress of chop or confused swell. The usable wind arc runs from roughly 140° to 320°, covering southeast through southwest, west, and into northwest. In practice the dominant summer direction is the afternoon SW/W thermal, so you're typically riding with the wind coming over your right shoulder when facing the water. The onshore angle is a genuine safety plus — a drifting rider gets pushed back toward the beach rather than out to sea, which matters when you're still building confidence or teaching. Getting here means making your way to the southern end of Kefalonia and following the road down toward Mounda Bay. Parking is available near the beach. The beach layout is safe and open, with space to rig up and launch without crowding out swimmers — though peak summer brings more visitors, so arriving before the thermal kicks in gives you the best pick of the sand. For food and drink, Kaminia Beach Kantina and Kantina Kaminia are right at the beach for a quick bite between sessions.
