Koundouros sits in a southwest-facing bay on Kea — the Cycladic island that Greeks also call Tzia. The bay is well-sheltered from the broader Aegean, and that protected geometry shapes everything about riding here: flat water, a calm launch zone, and conditions that suit all skill levels from first-timers to experienced freeriders. Getting to the spot means crossing the island to its southwest coast — a drive that ends at a bay opening up to the south and west. The beach itself serves as the launch area, and the sheltered nature of the bay makes rigging and launching typically uncomplicated. The usable kite window runs from 130° to 310°, covering southeast through south and southwest to west-northwest. In summer, the main source of wind is the southwest afternoon thermal that develops as the land heats up and pulls cooler sea air onshore. It builds through the afternoon and can offer a reliable session window of a few hours. Plan around the afternoon. Before you rig, understand the one wind direction that makes this spot dangerous: the Meltemi. This classic Aegean northerly blows directly offshore at Koundouros. If the forecast shows a northerly, stay off the water — the bay's sheltered character won't save you once you're downwind. Onshore or cross-shore from the south, southwest, or west is what you need. When the wind is coming from the right quarter, the water inside the bay is typically flat and forgiving. This is not a swell spot — it's a flat-water bay where you can work on technique, put in time on a foil, or just enjoy a clean session without surprises. If you're a beginner, the flat conditions are genuinely confidence-building. If you're more experienced, the calm water suits foiling or working through your trick list. Kea is accessible by ferry from the Greek mainland — it's among the closer Cycladic islands to the coast — which makes it a realistic long-weekend destination.
