The premier windsurfing and kitesurf beach of eastern Crete, 1.5 km east of Palekastro village. The northeast-facing bay is exposed to the Meltemi from the north that blows side-shore from the left at a consistent 6 Beaufort (25 kt) average during peak season — occasionally up to 30 kt. Two windsurf stations with kite rentals operate on the beach. Thermal acceleration from the surrounding hills adds several knots above the open-sea forecast. Flat water close to shore deepens quickly toward the open sea. Intermediate level due to strong and gusty conditions. Season May–October; peak June–September.

About Kouremenos (Palekastro)

Kouremenos sits at the northeastern tip of Crete, roughly 1.5 km east of Palekastro village, in a northeast-facing bay that opens straight into the summer Meltemi corridor. It's the premier kite and windsurf beach of eastern Crete for a reason: the geography does almost all the work. The beach is a short drive from Palekastro village. The launch area is sandy, with flat water close to shore — useful for sorting your lines and reading conditions before heading out. Depth increases quickly once you clear the nearshore zone, and conditions out on the open water are noticeably different from the calmer patch by the beach. Wind arrives from the north, hitting the bay side-shore from the left. This is the Meltemi, the seasonal northerly that dominates the Aegean from late spring through autumn. At Kouremenos, the surrounding hills funnel and thermally accelerate the wind, adding several knots above what you'd expect from the open-sea forecast. Average conditions during peak season sit around 25 knots, with gusts reaching up to 30 knots on stronger days. When the Meltemi is running, it doesn't ease off gently. That thermal kick is what puts Kouremenos firmly in intermediate territory. The wind is consistent by regional standards but can be strong and gusty, particularly as the day heats up and the thermal layer builds. Riders who are comfortable in 20-plus knots and know what to do when overpowered will find this spot delivers. Those still building fundamentals in lighter conditions should look elsewhere first. The riding splits naturally into two zones: flat water near shore for working on skills or getting dialled in, and the choppier, more open water beyond for proper downwind runs. The side-shore-from-left direction is manageable for getting back to the beach, but the wind strength means staying alert throughout your session. On facilities, Kouremenos is well set up. Freak Surf Crete, Gone Surfing Crete Windsurfing & Wingfoiling Center, and Gonesurfing all operate on or near the beach with kite instruction and equipment rental. For food and drink there's Glaros Beach Bar for something casual, plus Grandes Seaside Restaurant and other nearby options — Aliais, Batis, Chiona, and Grandes. Grandes Apartments Kouremenos handles accommodation for those who want to stay close and make the most of multi-day sessions. Season runs May through October. The Meltemi peaks from June through September — that four-month window is when Kouremenos earns its reputation. Outside of peak season the wind is lighter and less predictable.
