Vai sits at the far eastern tip of Crete, backed by the famous palm forest that gives the bay its name. For kiters, though, the draw is the Meltemi — the northerly wind system that dominates the Aegean each summer, funneled and accelerated through the gaps in Crete's eastern mountain ranges to deliver consistent conditions from June through September. The spot is near the end of the road through east Crete's coastal landscape. The beach is sandy, and the launch area gives you enough space to rig and sort your lines before heading in. Parking near the beach is typically available, though the palm forest draws tourist traffic through the day — morning arrivals beat the crowd. Wind runs from around west-northwest through north to east, which puts it firmly in onshore territory for most of the bay. The Meltemi here can run 15 to 25-plus knots on a solid day, often building through the afternoon as the thermal cycle reinforces the regional wind. The onshore angle means the water is typically choppy rather than flat — this is not a glass-water setup. You are riding through bumps and short-period chop most of the session. Open bay exposure keeps it lively. For skill level, the combination of onshore wind and rough surface makes Vai better suited to riders already comfortable in powered, messier conditions. Beginners are well served heading first to Kouremenos, the established kite hub nearby, where both Freak Surf Crete and Gonesurfing run kite schools with a more sheltered setup for learning. Once you can handle the kite confidently in 20-plus knots on rougher water, Vai is a solid session. Gear-wise, the summer Meltemi in this range calls for something in the 9m to 11m range depending on your weight — early-season days can be lighter, peak midsummer afternoons can push harder. A twin-tip with good upwind performance helps when the chop gets steep. The main thing to understand is the onshore direction: if something goes wrong, you drift toward the beach. Know your self-rescue before you launch, and check your safety systems are clean. Meltemi days can run long, and the eastern Mediterranean sun in July and August is no joke — bring water and sunscreen. After the session, Surf Beach Bar is right there for the wind-down drink. For food, Grandes, Maridatis, Port bar café, and Άλιαής all have you covered nearby. The palm forest backdrop is genuinely unusual — take ten minutes to walk through it once you've derrigged. Vai tends to get overlooked by kiters who default to west Crete, which makes it a quieter, reliable option when the Meltemi is running.
