Megali Ammos sits on the western coast of southern Evia (Euboea), about 2.5 km south of the small port town of Marmari. The name translates simply as 'big sand', which is an accurate description of what greets you: a wide, open beach that looks out across one of the most reliably windy stretches of water in Greece. The geography is what drives everything here. The island of Evia runs parallel to the Attica mainland, forming a compressed channel that funnels and accelerates the summer northerlies. From July through September, wind probability exceeds 90% — typically delivering 25 to 35 knots of clean, consistent pressure. You are not coming here to gamble on a forecast; you are coming because the wind almost certainly shows up. Getting here from Athens is manageable. The ferry from Rafina to Marmari takes roughly an hour, and from Marmari you drive south a couple of kilometres to reach the beach. Access is direct and parking is available near the shore. The beach itself is wide and sandy, giving you room to rig, launch, and land without the scramble you get at tighter spots. Just offshore, the small islet of Mikros Patelios does useful work deflecting incoming swell, which keeps the inside water largely flat. That flat-water character is the main draw for kiters and windsurfers travelling specifically for riding quality, not just wind volume. The usable wind arc runs 180° to 0°, covering the full north-south range. The prevailing northerlies blow across the beach in a way that typically produces cross or cross-onshore conditions — workable for launching and landing, without being directly onshore or dumping offshore. KiteGreece school operates on the beach and has board and kite rental available, so you are not stuck if you are travelling without full kit. That said, this spot carries a serious caveat: strong sea currents run through the channel. Megali Ammos is rated intermediate to advanced for that reason. If you get pushed downwind into the current, self-rescue needs to be solid. Know how to body-drag upwind, have your safety release drilled, and do not launch in conditions that exceed your level. The flat water and consistent pressure make the riding genuinely rewarding when you are ready for it — and genuinely hazardous if you are not. The season runs May through September, with the most consistent window from July to September when the northerlies are fully established. Earlier and later in the season can produce good days but with less certainty. Peak summer calls for smaller kites — many average-weight riders find themselves on 9 metres or below at the height of the season.
