About Ashwem Beach

Ashwem sits on North Goa's quieter northern coast, wedged between Morjim to the south and Mandrem to the north — part of a continuous stretch of sand that has become the area's main learning ground for kiters. It's less busy than Morjim, which matters when you're trying to focus on water starts without a tourist parade walking through your lines. The beach is long and flat with a gentle slope into the water — shallow entry, forgiving underfoot. Rigging up is straightforward with plenty of sand to work with. The wind arc runs 215° to 335°, centred on the SW quadrant, so the prevailing thermal wind comes in from the sea in a cross-onshore to onshore direction. That orientation is why this spot carries IKO beginner certification: on a typical session day the wind is working with you, not against you. SW thermal winds typically run 12–20 kt during the season. The thermals here can take time to develop, so mornings may be light — patience pays. Wait for the breeze to fill in properly before launching rather than chasing the first puff. The gentle beach slope means shallow water close to shore, which gives beginners working on body dragging and first upwind runs a forgiving environment to make mistakes in. If you're at an intermediate level, Ashwem on a typical day will feel comfortable rather than challenging — though on stronger days in the upper end of the wind range, there's still a satisfying session to be had. Local schools run IKO-certified lessons with radio-helmet coaching, which means instructors can guide you through moves in real time while you're in the water. That live audio feedback makes a genuine difference during early water starts and transitions. One thing to watch: the wind arc extends to 335° (NNW). When it swings toward the northerly end of that range, reassess conditions before heading out — the cross-onshore advantage that makes this spot learner-friendly shrinks as the direction shifts. Accommodation within easy reach includes Aquatica (~266m from the beach), Ashwem Beach Hotel (~429m), Anahata Retreat Beach Front Resort (~493m), and Babu Beach Resort (~583m). For food and drinks post-session, Ashwe 351 Beach Bar & All Day Dining (~948m) and Blue Waves bar and café (~1.2km) are the nearest options, with Bedrock and Black Horse a bit further up the strip. February through May is the sweet spot — SW thermals are most consistent and the monsoon is still months away. Ashwem stays quieter than its neighbours throughout peak season, which is a large part of the appeal.
