Getting into Mahabalipuram is uncomplicated — it's well-connected by road from Chennai and is a well-known tourist stop, so finding the beach area is straightforward. The beach is long enough to find a workable stretch, but take a walk before you set up. The town and temple area attract visitors and fishing activity, so you'll want to identify sections with enough clear space downwind. The more open stretches away from the main tourist cluster typically offer a cleaner launch window. Wind during the NE monsoon comes from the NE to NNE direction, which lands strongly side-shore on this east-facing coastline. Stand on the beach facing the water and the wind arrives from your left — a clean angle for launching and maintaining a solid power window. The Bay of Bengal serves up lively chop that suits riders who are comfortable in powered conditions. The wind typically runs 18–28 knots across the season, which is a meaningful spread. Lighter NE monsoon days are very manageable; the stronger end is genuinely powered territory, and you'll want appropriately sized gear for both ends of that band. This isn't a beginner spot. The Bay of Bengal can get choppy and confused when conditions build. Side-shore wind means that drifting or losing power moves you along the coast rather than straight out to sea — know where that takes you and what's in the way before you launch.
