About North Bay Island Kite Flat

North Bay Island sits a short boat ride from Port Blair, the Andaman capital, tucked into a corner where the NE trades do something useful: they deflect around Ross Island and arrive at this west-facing bay as a clean side-shore NNE to NNW flow. The result, for the right months, is a lagoon that earns its flat-water name literally — coral-fringed turquoise water sitting glass-still under consistent trade-wind pressure. Getting here means a boat from Port Blair — North Bay is an island a short sea crossing from the city. No kite-specific facilities exist on the island, so arrive entirely self-sufficient with everything you need for the session. The bay faces west, and the NNE–NNW side-shore angles open up a clean kite window across the lagoon. The wind runs 15–22 knots through the November–February season — a range wide enough to work with and consistent enough to plan around. That suits intermediate to more experienced riders: plenty of power to move confidently, but the coral-fringed setting demands solid water time and situational awareness before you commit. Flat water is what defines this spot. Low chop, predictable surface, enough room to carve or push into tricks without fighting swell. The trade-off sits beneath you: coral. Wipe out in a shallow section and you will find it. Booties are basic protection here, not optional gear. Stay aware of depth as you work toward the lagoon edges, and keep your lines clear of the reef perimeter. Launching in a coral environment takes thought. Find a section of beach clear of live reef for your launch and landing — dragging a kite over coral damages the reef and your lines both. Stay aware of other water users sharing the lagoon and give them plenty of space. No kite facilities exist on the island. Everything — food, water, spare lines, safety equipment — comes with you from Port Blair. The remoteness is part of the appeal, but any technical problem is your problem to handle on the day, or a boat ride back to sort out. For a self-sufficient intermediate rider or above with reef awareness, this is a genuinely uncommon flat-water session: a turquoise lagoon, trade-wind side-shore, coral gardens below. The Andaman Islands attract very few kiters, and this spot is no exception — a remarkable setting for those who plan ahead and arrive prepared.
