Candidasa sits on Bali's east coast in the Karangasem regency, a quiet coastal village that most visitors drive straight through on their way somewhere else. That suits kiters just fine. While the southern spots deal with crowds and development, Candidasa keeps things low-key — fishing boats moored on dark sand, a handful of beachfront restaurants, and a kite window that opens up nicely through the NE monsoon months. The drive from Denpasar follows the main coastal road east through Klungkung and into Karangasem. It's not a short trip, but the route is straightforward and the road quality is reasonable. Candidasa is a small strip of accommodation and restaurants along the coast — pulling over and sorting your kit is never a logistical headache. The beach faces northeast, which is the key to why the spot works. During the NE monsoon — roughly December through March — that orientation puts you square into the trade. The usable wind arc runs from 315° around through to 105°, picking up the NE to E sea breeze that tracks between 30° and 70°. Speeds in the 12–20 knot range are typical during the season, building through the morning as the thermal cycle gets going. By late afternoon the breeze can ease, so earlier sessions are generally more reliable. Nusa Penida provides some shelter to the bay, which keeps the water state more manageable than fully exposed ocean locations. The bay tends to stay relatively calm during onshore conditions, making water-starts and recoveries less of an ordeal. That said, the beach itself narrows at high tide — the strand is composed of dark sand and pebbles, and the usable launch area compresses meaningfully when the water is up. Check the tide before you commit to a session. Reefs and rocky sections around the bay edges are worth being aware of. This isn't a spot where you want to be dragged downwind blind — scan the launch area and know where the hard spots are before you unpack. Intermediate kiters who are comfortable self-rescuing should be fine on a typical day; beginners without solid water-starts would be better served learning somewhere more structured with on-site instruction. On the facilities front, Candidasa has what you need to be comfortable without any kite-specific infrastructure. Post-session options along the strip include Arco Iris Restaurant, Dapur Aria, Astawa, Joglo, Bali Club, Dimattina, and the Dining Room. ARCOIRIS Hotel, Ashyana Candidasa Beach Resort, and Ashyana Resort Restaurant sit close to the water for overnight stays. Bring your own kit, your own repair supplies, and your own judgement — there is no school or rental operation to lean on here. The draw is straightforward: a proper wind window during the NE monsoon, calmer water than Bali's exposed south coast, and a village atmosphere that hasn't been fully overtaken by tourism. If you're on the island from December to March and looking for something off the usual circuit, Candidasa is worth the drive east.
