About Ende Bay

Ende Bay sits at the heart of Flores, where Ende town meets the Savu Sea along a south-facing stretch of coastline. For kiteboarders working their way along the trans-Flores route, this bay offers an unexpected window of flat water and reliable seasonal wind — but only for those who arrive fully self-sufficient and know what they're doing. Ende has its own domestic airport, so you can fly in rather than committing to the full overland crossing. By road, the town sits at roughly the mid-island mark on the trans-Flores highway, a natural stopping point on any coast-to-coast journey. The bay runs along the southern edge of town — the waterfront is accessible from Ende's accommodation strip without complex logistics. From May through October, the SE trade wind builds across the open Savu Sea and hits Ende Bay as a side-onshore flow, typically running 12–20 knots. The usable kite window covers a broad arc from 115° to 265°, giving the wind a clean run in from the southeast and right through the south. Outside this season, reliable conditions are harder to call. Ende Bay is relatively sheltered water. Closer to the coastline, the bay produces flat-water zones — which makes for composed, powered riding without constant chop management. That shelter cuts both ways: it smooths the surface but can also produce gusts or lulls that aren't always obvious from shore. Read the conditions carefully before you launch, and never alone. There is no kite infrastructure here. No schools, no rentals, no organised launch area, no safety boat standing by. What you have is a bay with seasonal wind, flat water, and a town behind you. Riders are expected to manage their own setup, understand self-rescue, and make honest assessments of unfamiliar conditions — this is advanced-only territory. Those who arrive prepared will find uncrowded flat-water riding in a location most kiters simply drive past. Ende town handles accommodation and food adequately. Hotel Grand Wisata, Hotel Safari, Ikhlas Hotel, LCR HOTEL, Hotel Satar Mese, and Nurjaya Hotel cover the lodging side. For meals, Dapur Ende and MASSIDA Ende Korean KAFE both do the job; LED Coffee and cita rasa work for a coffee stop before a session. None of it is kite-focused, but it's enough for a comfortable multi-day stay. The obvious add-on is Kelimutu — the volcano whose famous tri-coloured crater lakes sit within day-trip range of Ende town. Time a kite session for the May–October window and the Kelimutu dawn visit the following morning, and you've built a proper two-night stop rather than a rushed pass-through.
