Maumere Bay sits on the north coast of Flores, a sheltered arc of water close to Maumere town in East Nusa Tenggara. The bay faces north — which matters enormously for kitesurfers — because it puts the beach in direct line with the N–NE sea breezes and dry-season trade winds that arrive reliably between June and September, typically running 10–20 knots. The Indian Ocean swell is blocked by the island's mass to the south, leaving the bay with calm, flat water throughout the season. That pairing of steady wind and benign surface conditions is what makes this a good call for intermediate riders looking to build time on the water. Maumere town is the natural base for this part of Flores — supplies, accommodation, and onward logistics run through there before you reach the water. The beach itself is a working stretch of coast; there's no dedicated kite centre, no school, no rental counter at the spot. Come fully self-sufficient with your own gear, and plan for local servicing not being an option. That's the trade-off for riding somewhere that most kite travellers haven't put on their radar. The riding reflects the setting. Flat, sheltered water and a consistent N–NE arc. The usable kite window spans 285° to 75° — west-northwest through north to east-northeast — which covers the dominant trade wind and sea breeze directions without issue. Conditions inside the bay tend to stay manageable even as the breeze builds, making it a reliable place to put in focused practice sessions. Transitions, toeside riding, and jumps are all doable without fighting the water. This isn't a wave destination; it's a flat-water progression spot, and it makes no apology for that. No kite-specific infrastructure is listed at the beach, but food options in the area are well covered. Golden Fish, Pasar Senja, RESTO 78, Wares 77, Warung Dahlia, Warung Makan, and Warung Mama Dita are all in the vicinity — a spread of local warungs and sit-down restaurants for fuelling up before or after a session. Maumere is also the access point for Kelimutu, the volcanic lakes further into the Flores interior, and is known as a diving destination. On days when the wind doesn't show or you want to vary the agenda, there are genuine reasons to be here beyond kitesurfing. The dry season — June through September — is when conditions are reliably on; outside that window, expect the wind to become inconsistent. Come prepared, keep expectations in line with a raw and unpolished coastal spot, and time your visit for the dry season. The return: flat water, consistent trade winds, and a part of eastern Indonesia that most riders haven't yet found.
