About Hu'u Beach

Hu'u Beach sits on the western shore of Sumbawa's south coast, about 4 kilometres west of the famous Lakey Peak break. While Lakey draws the surf crowd, Hu'u is a quieter village beach tucked into the same southeast trade wind corridor — and that's exactly what makes it worth knowing about. The SE trades run from roughly 130–150° through the core season, June to September, delivering 20–30 knots of reliable, side-to-offshore pressure across both this bay and the more famous stretch to the east. The usable kite window spans from 110° all the way to 250°, giving you decent range as the wind shifts through the day or between systems. Getting here from Dompu — the nearest town of any size — means heading south through rice paddies and fishing villages. Hu'u village sits right on the beach, so the approach is straightforward once you're in the area. There's no complex road network to navigate; the beach is essentially the village waterfront. The launch area in front of the village is where the spot earns its reputation for flat-water riding. The bay is slightly more sheltered here than out at Lakey Peak, which means cleaner water surface when the trades are running. If you're learning or you prefer uncluttered water over chop, this is the zone to set up in. The wind still has enough fetch to be fully usable — you're not in a dead pocket — but conditions are generally more forgiving than the more exposed outer bay. The outer bay is a different character. More open to the full fetch of the Indian Ocean, more exposed wind-wise, and better suited to riders who want extra challenge and space. If you've ridden Lakey and want something with a bit more rawness, the outer section delivers. Hazards are typical of a working village beach: watch for fishing activity, especially in the early morning when local boats are moving. The beach narrows at certain tidal states, so check your upwind and downwind run before you rig. As with most spots in this part of Indonesia, reef is never far from the surface once you get outside the sandy patch in front of the village. Facilities along the strip cover the basics well. Ali's Bar, Compass Warung, Fatmah's and Kita Garden Homestay handle food and drink, while Any Lestari, Blue Water, Danny Juljol Homestay, Inay Homestay, Lakey Beach Inn and Lakey Beach Inn Hotel take care of accommodation. It's a small scene — you'll run into the same faces at dinner — but that's part of the appeal of a village beach that hasn't been overrun. June through September is the window to be here. The SE trades are at their most consistent, the skies are generally dry, and the whole south Sumbawa coast fires up. Outside that window, conditions become patchier. If you're basing yourself in the Lakey area for a kite trip, Hu'u is a natural half-day alternative when the main peak gets crowded or you want more room to work on flat-water technique.
