About Nungas

Nungas sits about 1 km north of Lakey Peak on Sumbawa's south coast — same region, same SE trade wind season, but a noticeably different kind of session. Where Lakey has a steeper, more radical reputation, Nungas offers a large open bay with deep flat water that stays ridable all day regardless of tide. That consistency is its main appeal: you're not watching the clock to catch a specific window. The spot is reached by the same route as Lakey Peak. Sumbawa is accessible by ferry from Lombok or via regional air links; once on the south coast, Nungas and Lakey are within 1 km of each other, so you're working from the same base. From the launch area, the bay opens up to the south and southeast. The wind window runs 60°–200°, which puts the SE trade winds at cross- to side-offshore for most of the season. July through October is when the trades establish themselves, running at 13–25 knots. That cross-offshore angle keeps the airflow cleaner over the water but also means anyone who can't water-start confidently is in trouble — this is not a beginner-friendly spot despite the forgiving wave faces. On the water, Nungas is best suited to intermediate and above wave kiters. The wave faces are long and smooth rather than steep and punchy, which gives you room to build turns and ride the face without having to make instant critical decisions. Deep water means the waves build gradually; if you get caught in a bad situation, the bay is more forgiving than a shallow reef break would be — though the coral is still there and still matters. Coral is the primary hazard. The water is warm — around 27°C — so you don't need much in the way of a wetsuit, but coral booties are strongly recommended. A drift into shallow water or an unlucky crash without foot protection can go bad quickly. No facilities are listed at Nungas itself. Given the proximity to Lakey Peak, whatever accommodation and services exist in that area are your support network — plan your gear setup and nutrition before leaving base. There's nothing to rely on at the waterfront. July through October is the window. Outside the SE trade season, this spot loses its defining character. If you're putting together a south Sumbawa trip, Nungas works well as a complement to Lakey rather than a standalone destination — same conditions, less crowd, more room to breathe.
