Pelabuhan Ratu Bay sits on the southern coast of West Java, facing directly into the Indian Ocean roughly three hours' drive from Jakarta. The bay opens south, which means it catches the full fetch of open-ocean swell and whatever the southeast trades decide to deliver — and from May through September, they deliver consistently. Expect 15 to 25 knots of side-onshore wind during the season, angling across the bay in a way that keeps the kite window clean while still giving you some push down the line. The approach from Jakarta runs through the Sukabumi highlands before dropping down to the coast. The road gets narrower as you get closer to the water, but the bay itself is well-known enough that surf camps and local guides have the logistics sorted. Most of the kite action happens out of the sandy sections along the bay's shore — the beach narrows and steepens in places, so timing your sessions with the tide is worth doing before you rig up. The water here is genuinely two different experiences depending on where you set up. The flatter sandy stretches give you room to work on your riding without constantly reading breaking surf, but the Indian Ocean doesn't stay flat for long. Swell pushes through regularly, and when the trades are up, you'll be riding alongside proper surf rather than just chop. That mix of wind swell and groundswell coming from the south makes this a legitimately interesting spot for experienced riders who want more than a flat-water park session. The hazards are real and worth understanding before you launch. Strong rip currents run through the bay — this is an advanced spot because of them. If you get pulled off your board or lose your kite, the current can move you faster and further than you'd expect. Riders who know how to work with rip current patterns rather than against them will find they can use them as part of the ride; everyone else should be honest with themselves before unrolling a kite here. The swell adds complexity on the water and at the launch if conditions stack up. The southeast trade window runs May through September, and the surf camps in the area organise kite sessions through exactly that period — which is your best signal for when to go. Outside the trade season, conditions become less reliable and the setup effort from Jakarta becomes harder to justify. There are no dedicated kite facilities listed at the spot itself, but the surf camp infrastructure in the area means accommodation, food, and local knowledge are accessible. Connecting with one of the camps before you arrive is the practical move — they'll know current conditions on the beach, where the rips are running, and whether the sandbanks are set up favourably.
