Katupat Lagoon sits deep inside the Togean Islands archipelago — a scatter of jungle-covered islands in the Gulf of Tomini, tucked into the neck of Central Sulawesi. Getting here is part of the commitment: you'll ferry or speedboat from either Ampana on the south coast or Gorontalo to the north, then work your way through the archipelago by local boat. There is no kite shop, no rental rack, no instructor on the beach. If you're not self-sufficient, this spot isn't for you. If you are, the reward is a sheltered flat-water lagoon over white sand with water so clear you can read the bottom from your bar. The lagoon is oriented to make the most of the West and Southwest winds that push through during the dry season, roughly July through September. The usable kite window runs from around 200° through 340°, which covers the W/SW arc cleanly and gives you a decent buffer on either side. Wind in this window typically runs in the 10–18 knot range — not a powered-up blasting session by default, but consistent enough for foilers and lighter riders on larger kites to get real water time. Heavier riders or twin-tip beginners will want to be honest about the lighter end of that range. The lagoon itself is flat. Not "flat for Indonesia" flat — genuinely flat, sheltered water with no meaningful chop on most sessions. That makes it a technical freestyler's blank canvas and an ideal environment for anyone working on unhooked moves or simply wanting smooth, predictable water under their board. There's no crowd. On most days you will have the entire lagoon to yourself, which sounds like marketing copy until you actually get here and realise it's just true. The surrounding reef and drop-offs are world-class for snorkelling and diving — the Togeans sit at the edge of the Coral Triangle, so the underwater scene beneath your kite is legitimately extraordinary. Budget time after sessions for the water. Hazards are what you'd expect from a remote, undeveloped lagoon: no rescue infrastructure, no medical facilities close by, and coral that demands respect on the edges of the flat-water zone. Launch and land with care, and keep your sessions conservative until you've read the water properly. Boat traffic in the wider archipelago can be unpredictable — stay visible and stay aware. There are no kite facilities on site. Bring everything: gear, spares, a repair kit, and a plan for what happens if something breaks. The nearest anything is back in Ampana or Gorontalo, and neither is a quick trip.
