Pantai Bira sits at the southern tip of Sulawesi, where a limestone headland bay faces SE into the Flores Sea. The water is clear and turquoise, the beach is sandy, and from May through October the SE trade winds arrive side-onshore at 15–25 knots — steady enough for a proper session, scenic enough to make leaving feel like a mistake. Getting here requires a real road trip through South Sulawesi to Bulukumba regency. The distance filters the crowd, which is most of the point. Once you arrive and walk the beach, the setting makes the journey worthwhile: limestone cliffs framing the bay, clear turquoise water, and somewhere along the nearby coast at Tanaberu, traditional wooden Phinisi schooners in various stages of construction on the beach. The kite launch is on the south beach. The SE wind comes in side-onshore, which makes for a forgiving entry and gives you a safety margin if the launch doesn't go cleanly. The water close to shore is clear with a sandy bottom. The limestone headland that frames the bay is your main geographic constant — track your downwind position and know your exit before you go out, because riding toward that limestone is not a plan you want to improvise. The bay gives you a decent stretch of open water to work with. The side-onshore angle keeps things manageable and allows for a downwinder along the coast if you've sorted your exit first. Wind-wise, Bira is honest rather than epic. The SE trades run May to October, and the 15–25 knot range covers most of the season. Better days feel solid; lighter days ask for a bigger kite or patience. If you're chasing the heaviest wind in the area, Jeneponto about 40 kilometres west is the stronger option. Bira suits riders who want the full picture — conditions, scenery and real local life together. After a session, Warung Bamboo, Warung Java Timur, Warung La Lezatta, Salassa homestay, a general Warung and Cheap and good Restaurant all sit within reach of the beach. Prices are local, the pace unhurried. A visit to Tanaberu, the nearby Phinisi boat-building village, is worth building into the trip. Traditional wooden schooners are constructed by hand on the beach here, the same way they've been built for generations. Bira isn't a kite resort — it's a kite spot in a working Indonesian village, and that's precisely what makes the trip worthwhile.
