Dunfanaghy Lagoon sits tucked behind the dune system on the north Donegal coast — a sheltered tidal lagoon that occupies a very specific niche in the Irish kite scene. County Donegal is defined by its Atlantic westerlies: powerful, consistent, and largely unrideable for anything that doesn't face west. Dunfanaghy Lagoon flips that logic. It only activates when the wind swings east, into the 30°–150° arc, making it the spot to know about when easterly episodes arrive and every other stretch of this coast is blocked or onshore in the wrong direction. The surrounding dunes and terrain shelter the lagoon from the dominant westerly weather, so when the rare E or ENE wind shows up, the surface here can be noticeably flatter and more protected than anything on the exposed Atlantic coast. It's counter-programming: the fallback that delivers when your primary plan is blown out, and a solid downwind day option — ride across the lagoon and work your way back upwind in calmer water. Getting there is simple. Dunfanaghy is a small village on the north Donegal coastal road, easy to find and well-connected. The launch area is on the south side of the lagoon, east of the village — accessible from the road, with enough space to rig before walking in. The critical variable here is tide. The lagoon needs to be at or near high tide to provide enough riding depth. At lower water, sandbars and shallows emerge across the area and the session becomes unworkable. Check your tide tables before you make the drive. Even at high tide, the bottom is uneven: various depths and sandbars are distributed throughout, so approach unfamiliar sections carefully and resist pushing into shallower water without knowing what's underneath. Getting caught on a sandbar on a tidal flat is a straightforward way to end your session and drag your kit out in ankle-deep water. For skill level, the sheltered flat water can look appealing to intermediates wanting to work on upwind skills in calmer conditions — and for the right kind of session, it delivers on that. The tidal complexity and uneven bottom mean beginners should only be here with someone who knows the spot. Back in the village, the options are solid.
