Rush sits on the North Dublin coast roughly 30 minutes from the city centre, where a headland divides the shoreline into two distinct beaches: North Beach and South Beach. Both face east over the Irish Sea, sharing a similar wind exposure but offering noticeably different experiences on the water and on the sand. Getting here from Dublin is straightforward — head north along the coastal road and follow signs into Rush toward the headland. Parking is available at both beaches, though South Beach draws the crowds in summer given its Blue Flag status. On a busy weekend, arriving early makes a noticeable difference; the later you show up, the tighter the launch window gets. The usable kite window runs from roughly north-northeast (10°) all the way around through east and south to south-southeast (170°). That's a broad arc, but the conditions inside it are not all equal. South and southwest winds are the local favourite, delivering cross-shore conditions with relatively flat, organised water — manageable for intermediates and a pleasure for more experienced riders who want to put in solid mileage along the beach. Northeast winds shift the whole session: pushing in off the open Irish Sea, they bring chop and swell, so expect a bumpier, more physical ride when the compass swings that way. South Beach's Blue Flag reflects both its quality and its popularity. In summer, the beach fills with families, swimmers, and paddlers — all of whom you need to account for when rigging and launching. Your downwind zone requires serious attention here. North Beach runs quieter and tends to give riders more room to move, making it the more practical choice on peak days or when you'd rather focus on the session than navigate the crowd. The water here is honest Irish Sea: not a flat lagoon, not a heavy break, but variable enough to keep you on your toes. In south or southwest winds the shore's easterly aspect gives you a reliable cross-shore angle with reasonably flat water — that's when Rush is at its best. Irish conditions also mean a wetsuit year-round; the sea stays cold even in July and August, and the wind can be unforgiving when it builds. After getting out of the water, Rush village has solid options. Martin's Bar, Cafe Verde, and Genoa Cafe work well for a drink or a quick bite. For a fuller meal, D' Vine at Jacks, Ocean Inn, Oriental Kitchen, Joyous Garden, Haldi By Manish, and Panda Inn are all accessible from the beach. If you're making a weekend of it, North Beach Caravan Park sits right on the doorstep.
