About Campione del Garda

Campione del Garda sits on the western shore of Lake Garda in Lombardy, tucked into the narrowest stretch of the lake where limestone cliffs crowd the shoreline on both sides. It holds a rare distinction: the only dedicated kitesurf beach on the entire lake, and it earns that reputation twice a day. The spot runs on two Alpine thermals that operate on opposite schedules with near-clockwork reliability through the season. The Pelér arrives from the north each morning — typically 6 am to 11 am — delivering 15 to 30 knots side-shore off the east-facing beach. By midday it fades, and the Ora takes over from the south, running noon to around 6 pm at a steadier 15 to 20 knots, also side-shore. One beach, two distinct wind windows. Early risers and post-lunch riders both get their session without fighting for the same conditions. The water is flat to slightly choppy — this is a contained freshwater lake, not an ocean. You get a short, manageable chop rather than long swell, which makes it genuinely accessible for intermediates working on technique. That said, the Pelér at its peak can push hard, so don't underestimate it based on the lake setting. Before you arrive, sort your paperwork. A valid FIV (Federazione Italiana Vela) licence, club membership, and liability insurance are all mandatory — these are checked on site, not optional formalities you can talk your way around. If you're travelling from abroad, contact the local club in advance and confirm what you need to bring. A rescue service operates on site during sessions, which provides a real safety net in the lake's enclosed geography. The beach faces east across the water with the wind arc running north to south (0°–180°), mirroring the two thermals exactly. Riders work in a defined zone between the beach and the opposite bank. Know where your downwind boundary sits before you launch — the lake narrows here, and the far shore is closer than it looks from the beach. Season runs May through September. For accommodation, Agriturismo Al Franet and Agriturismo La Zangola offer rural stays nearby, while casaelka residence suits a more self-contained setup. After a session, 3Mùzen handles food and drinks, Bar Ristorante Pizzeria Da Tonino covers pizza, and Cuba Cafè or Bar Long Island work for a post-ride drink. Bar Gelateria Tremosine takes care of gelato if that's first on the list. Campione is not a casual drop-in spot — the licensing requirements ensure that — but for riders who've done the preparation, it's one of the more compelling freshwater kite setups in Europe. Two thermal windows, flat water, on-site rescue, and an honest side-shore pattern make it a legitimate destination.
