About Grado Pineta

Grado Pineta is a lagoon-side kitesurf spot on the island of Grado, sitting at the northern end of the Gulf of Venice in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Grado itself is a small island connected to the Italian mainland, and the Pineta area is its lagoon-facing shore. The beach faces roughly SSW across the protected lagoon water, and that aspect is the key to why it works: when the Bora arrives from the northeast, you get a clean cross-shore run over water that's naturally sheltered from open-sea swell. That flat water is what makes this place special. A sandbank sits somewhere between 100 and 500 metres offshore, and inside that bar the lagoon turns glassy — butter-flat conditions ideal for intermediate riders looking to work on technique, or for anyone who simply wants a smooth, predictable session without fighting chop. Ride out past the bank and you'll find more texture and chop as the Gulf opens up. The main hazard to plan around is the tide. Grado sits in a part of the Adriatic where the tidal range runs 60–80 cm — enough to noticeably change depths across a shallow lagoon. The difference between high and low water affects both the launching zone and the sandbank itself. Check the tidal state before you rig: at low water you may need to walk your kite further out before you can get going. Wind arrives year-round at Pineta, with Bora spells showing up across all seasons. The Bora is the headliner — a northeast regional wind that hits the beach cross-shore. SE, S, and SW winds also fall within the usable arc (the kite window runs from about ESE to WSW) and can produce solid sessions, though each direction brings its own water texture depending on fetch across the lagoon. Skill-wise, the flat water inside the sandbank is forgiving and makes this a good intermediate spot. The tidal variation and shallow lagoon navigation add a layer of local knowledge worth getting right, so first-timers here should go with someone who knows the channels and depth changes. After the session, the Pineta area has you covered. Grab food or a drink at Chiosco da Erika or Coco Loco Grado Pineta, or sit down at Le Bronse, Ai Pioppi, or Airone. Bar agli Specchi, Capricorno, and Costa del Sol handle the café and bar side. If you're staying over, both Adriaco and Camping Al Bosco are options in the area.
