About Marina di Grosseto – Fiumara

Tucked inside the Maremma Natural Reserve at the northern tip of Marina di Grosseto's long shoreline, Fiumara has a reputation as Tuscany's best kitesurf spot — and a session here makes it easy to see why. The beach faces west, sitting inside a protected natural park that keeps development off the dunes and the water in good shape. Getting there is straightforward: follow the coast north toward Marina di Grosseto and keep going until the reserve opens up. Parking comes right up on the beach itself, which means rigging happens within metres of the water — no long gear-hauls, no guessing the wind direction from a distant car park. The launch is a long, natural sand beach. There are no rocks in the water and the bottom stays sandy throughout, so a low-speed crash stays a splash rather than a graze. Water runs flat to small chop depending on wind strength and direction, which makes it accessible for a wide range of riders. In the afternoon, thermally-driven winds typically build into the 15–25 knot range — enough to get most kites flying without being punishing if you're still building confidence. Three main wind windows work here. The Maestrale arrives from the northwest and hits the beach side-shore from the right — a clean angle that keeps you tracking along the shoreline and makes it easy to work back upwind. The Libeccio comes in from the southwest side-onshore from below, giving a slightly more forgiving angle for riders who prefer a bit of push onto the beach rather than pure side-shore. The Tramontana blows from the north and similarly comes in side-onshore. All three fall within the 135°–315° usable wind arc, so when the thermals fire in the afternoon there's typically at least one of them doing something useful. Peak season runs June through September. Summer afternoons are when the thermals reliably kick in — mornings can be glassy, so the usual pattern is an early coffee, a relaxed rig, and waiting for the wind to build through midday. The Maremma coast doesn't draw the tourist density that piles into northern Tuscany, which means the beach stays relatively uncrowded even in August. Kite's Angels Beach operates on the sand here, so instruction and equipment hire are available on site. For food and drink after a session, Bar Ducale, Bar Magi, and Coyote Bar are nearby options. Sit-down meals can be found at Agri Ristorante Pavin, Degusteria Mammeglio, and Il Mago di Oz. If you're making a longer trip of it, accommodation in the area includes Agriturismo Bernarda, Agriturismo le Grazie, and Fattoria San Lorenzo – Il Pozzino, with Alberese Camper Park covering the camping angle. One note on conditions: this is thermal wind, which means it can build quickly in the afternoon and ease off again toward evening. Keep an eye on how the session is progressing and don't get caught out on a long downwind run when the breeze starts to soften. With sand underfoot, flat-to-choppy water, and good beach access, Fiumara is a forgiving spot — but thermal wind always deserves respect.
