Sottomarina sits at the southern tip of the Venetian lagoon, a flat sandy barrier island just across the water from the old fishing town of Chioggia. The northern Adriatic opens to the south, and on a clean wind day the view back toward the lagoon entrance makes clear why people keep returning here. The beach faces SSE — shore normal around 175° — which puts the usable kite window between 105° and 245°, running from ESE through S to WSW. Two winds make this spot tick: the Scirocco from the SE pushes in onshore and drives the bulk of reliable sessions, while the Bora from the NE also produces spectacular conditions here. The sea state reflects both: the beach is sandy throughout, with moderate waves building when the Bora is running. Getting here is straightforward. Follow the main road into Chioggia and cross onto the island — parking is generally available near the beach, though summer visitor pressure changes things considerably. That's part of why the real kite season runs October through May: once the bathing season ends, the beach opens fully and you're no longer competing with swimmers and sun loungers for space. The wind season and the access window align well, and the beach feels genuinely different outside summer — quieter, more purposeful. An IKO-certified school operates on site, which gives you a useful local touchpoint if you're new to the spot or uncertain about conditions. They'll give you a straight read on whether the sea state matches what the forecast suggested — worth checking on days when the Bora is building and you're unsure how things will develop. Water character shifts with wind direction. Scirocco sessions build progressive chop as fetch extends across open Adriatic water — conditions that suit a range of levels if the wind stays consistent. Bora runs differently: punchier, with a more defined wave pattern that rewards experienced riders but asks for sharper decision-making.
