Araha Beach occupies a gentle curve on Chatan's east coast in central Okinawa, sheltered behind a fringing reef that flattens the Pacific swell into rideable water. The beach sits just south of Camp Foster and has grown into Okinawa's most established kite hub — there's a reason local riders congregate here rather than chase spots elsewhere on the island. The approach is straightforward: Chatan's coastal road brings you to the beach, and parking and amenities are within easy reach. The launch is on the eastern shore, sandy underfoot, with room to rig clear of the promenade — though weekend crowds build through the day, so earlier sessions keep the setup zone calmer. Wind here is the NE trade. It runs at 30–60° and delivers 15–22 knots across most of the year, with the strongest, most consistent window running December through March when the Northeast monsoon adds push and regularity. That said, rideable sessions appear well outside those months — 330-plus sunny days a year means this place rarely sits completely idle. The reef changes everything about the water quality. Inside the fringing reef you get flat to mildly choppy water — a surface that suits progression riding, freestyle, and anyone who wants predictable conditions underfoot for the first time under a kite. The reef line gives you a clear visual reference for the outer boundary of the riding area. Stay inside it; do not push beyond into open water without understanding the conditions on the other side. Northeast wind is cross-onshore at this east-facing beach, which puts the kite window neatly overhead and keeps drift pushing you back toward shore rather than out to sea — a useful safety margin. The usable wind arc runs from roughly north to south-southeast; pay attention when the wind clocks toward the southeastern quarter, as the angle turns more cross-offshore and the margin shrinks. The strip behind the beach works hard for its reputation. Accommodation at Aqua Palace Chatan and HAMBY 101 makes an overnight kite trip easy. Post-session food at Bensons, Chatan Grill Terrace, Depot's Garden, or CoCo壱番屋 is close; Bar Lux Okinawa, Cheers, hali hali, and Hawaiian Juice Bar handle the debrief end of the day. Okinawa's subtropical climate keeps the spot accessible year-round. Beginners benefit most from the consistent winter trade winds without thermal variability. Intermediates and advanced riders will find the flat inside water ideal for freestyle and technique work. The reef defines the riding area naturally — this is a progression and precision spot, not a downwinder launch.
