About Diani Beach

Diani Beach sits on Kenya's Indian Ocean coast, about 30 kilometres south of Mombasa in Kwale County. The beach stretches for around 25 kilometres, and a reef running parallel to shore creates a protected lagoon — the kind of flat-water setup that makes learning and freestyle riding genuinely enjoyable. Getting here means heading south from Mombasa along the coast road into Kwale County. The wind arc runs from 15° through to 165°, which means both main wind seasons fall cleanly inside the riding window. The Kaskazi blows from the northeast between December and March, typically around 20 knots, and with the reef absorbing much of the incoming swell, conditions inside the lagoon are notably flat. It's the season that suits beginners and freestyle riders most — consistent, manageable winds and a forgiving water surface. From roughly April through September, the Kusi trades in from the southeast at 25 knots and above. The swell builds, conditions get more dynamic, and the lagoon character shifts with tide and wind strength. Intermediate and advanced riders tend to prefer this window; the extra power and chop reward skill. There's a shoulder period at either end of each season when conditions are less settled — worth checking carefully around the transitions. The launch is a medium beach launch straight off the sand — no rocky point to navigate, no long paddle through breakers. Tide height matters: at lower tide the beach opens up and the lagoon gets more depth; at higher tide the usable sand can narrow noticeably. The reef is the main structural feature to understand before you ride, particularly when the Kusi is running and swell is pushing through. A briefing from one of the local schools before your first session is time well spent. Multiple kite schools operate here and cater to all levels, making Diani a workable destination whether you're completing your first course or looking for coaching to move your riding forward. For food and drinks near the beach, African Pot and Dodoma Bar handle the casual side; Bereez Cafe, Bone Bar and Restaurant, Cape of Good Hope, Coast Dishes Resturant, and Eddie's Longue all offer sit-down meals.
