Anakao sits on Madagascar's sun-baked southwest coast, a small fishing village well off the tourist trail. The coastline here faces the Indian Ocean almost directly, and the wind arc of 135°–225° captures the prevailing southerly trades that roll in from open water — a clean fetch with little to interrupt it before it reaches the beach. Getting here takes commitment. Anakao is not on a sealed-road circuit; the most practical approach is via the regional capital to the north, and the last stretch typically involves a boat transfer across a stretch of open water. Plan your arrival with tides and swells in mind — a loaded boat in choppy conditions is nobody's idea of fun. Once you're here, the pace drops immediately. The village is small, the beach is the focus, and Il Camaleonte — the diving, kitesurf, excursion, and mangrove centre whose name the spot carries — is your main point of contact for kite-related logistics. They handle kite tuition alongside diving and local tours, so you can mix a kite session in the morning with an underwater exploration in the afternoon if conditions allow. The wind window (135°–225°) captures the southerly trades consistent with southwest Madagascar's prevailing pattern. When the wind is on, you get a side-to-side-onshore angle depending on exactly where the direction sits within that arc — a 135° SE component brings it from the right, a 225° SW swing brings it from the left. Neither extreme is offshore, which keeps safety margins reasonable, but conditions can shift within the arc across a single session, so stay aware. The water close to shore can be shallower than it looks from the beach, particularly at lower tide. Pack reef shoes — a minor inconvenience that pays off quickly if the bottom turns out to be less forgiving than it appears. Beyond the nearshore zone, there is room to ride. Facilities are village-simple. Anakao Ocean Lodge sits closest to the water at under 500 metres from the launch area. Auberge Peter Pan is about 1.4 kilometres out, Chez Clovis and Chez Clovis Anakao are around two kilometres away, and Chez Emile adds another option at a similar distance. For meals, Antserake Beach is the listed restaurant option but sits around 13 kilometres from the launch — plan your day accordingly. The Anakao kite school operates around two kilometres from the launch; contact ahead to confirm rental gear and lesson availability, because what is on offer at a remote Malagasy spot can vary from what appears in a listing. This is not somewhere you show up with no local knowledge and hope for the best. The remoteness, the logistics, and the language barrier all favour riders who have done their homework and hold at least solid intermediate water skills before arrival. Come prepared, and Anakao delivers a genuinely off-grid kite experience in a place most kiters will never reach.
