About Anse La Raie

Anse La Raie sits on the northern tip of Mauritius, in the Rivière du Rempart district, where a barrier reef roughly 2.5 kilometres offshore does the heavy lifting. That reef kills incoming ocean swell before it reaches the lagoon, leaving a flat, shallow water surface that suits freestyle practice and progression sessions far better than the exposed beaches elsewhere on the island. The trade winds arrive from the SE–E through the main kite season, typically running June through September. When they're on, you're looking at somewhere between 14 and 22 knots of side-onshore breeze — enough to keep things interesting without overwhelming intermediate riders. The angle means you're generally working across the lagoon rather than fighting a dead-onshore situation. Outside peak season the trades can become lighter and less reliable, so if kitesurfing is the reason for the trip, June through September gives you the best odds. The lagoon itself is the draw. Flat water, manageable depth across most of the rideable area, and a reef keeping ocean swell firmly out of the picture. For freestyle riders — unhooked tricks, freeride runs, kite loops toward the edges — this is a genuine spot rather than a tourist tick. Intermediates will find it forgiving enough to push into new territory without getting punished every session. Launch is from the beach at Anse La Raie village. The shoreline is workable, though as with any shallow lagoon, tide can affect both rideable depth and available beach, so worth checking before you rig. The reef is a hard boundary downwind — know where you are relative to it before you start riding. Further along the coast, Kite At North kitesurfing school and Villas is around eight kilometres away if you want lessons or a guided read on local conditions. For accommodation, Cape Point is the closest option at roughly 643 metres from the water.
