East-coast cove with reef within 50 m of shore; SE trade winds side-onshore, best May–Oct. Suited to experienced kiters; less crowded than Le Morne.

About Roches Noires

Roches Noires sits on the north-east coast of Mauritius in the Rivière du Rempart district — a compact, east-facing cove that sits well away from the busier crowds gathered at the island's most famous kitesurfing destinations. The spot is less well-known than Le Morne, and that lower profile is exactly what draws the riders who make the effort to find it. The South-East trade winds arrive here side-onshore, which means clean, angled lines across the water and a natural push back toward the beach when things don't go to plan. The usable wind window runs from 355° through 125°, covering northerly through easterly and into south-easterly directions — so the reliable SE trade winds that define the May-to-October season sit squarely inside that arc. Within that core season the wind here tends to show up with the kind of consistency that makes east-coast Mauritius worth planning a trip around. That reef, though. It sits within 50 metres of shore, and it earns this spot its experienced-kiter rating. The proximity is tight enough that you need to know your positioning at all times: confident water starts, reliable board control, and a clear head about your downwind drift. This is not a spot to stretch your skill level on — it's a spot to enjoy once you already have the skills to respect it. Come here with solid fundamentals, keep your lines clean, and manage your downwind margin carefully. On a good day the riding here is genuinely satisfying: trade-wind consistency, relatively blue water, and an east-coast swell character that depends on what's pushing through the reef gaps at any given moment. Expect flat-to-light-chop on calmer days; when swell is running, the water can pick up noticeably faster than open-ocean conditions might suggest. Read conditions on arrival and be prepared to adapt rather than assuming today matches yesterday. There's no large kite school infrastructure at Roches Noires. That's part of why it stays uncrowded, and part of why you need to arrive completely self-sufficient. Rig on the beach, find a clean launch line, know your exit plan before you go. The beach has a low-key, no-frills feel — a serious kite-trip destination rather than a resort beach. For accommodation, you're well served nearby: Azuri Cour Ambre, La Case Creole Villa, Les 2 Cocos, Maison Lantana, and So Beach Villa all put you close to the water without needing to commute from a resort town. For food after a session, Cheng's and Mr Berti Pizza and Cafe are your local options. Time your trip for May through October and arrive with real experience behind you. Roches Noires rewards the rider who reads the spot carefully — and keeps a respectful distance from the reef.
