Belle Mare sits on the east coast of Mauritius, part of the long Flacq District coastline that curves around one of the island's most sheltered lagoons. The fringing reef keeps open-ocean swell at bay, leaving you with water that's reliably clear and a sandy bottom you can watch pass beneath your board. That combination of protection and space is what makes this stretch work for multiple riding styles — from flat-water freestyle to genuine bump-and-jump where the chop rolls through. The village of Palmar merges into Belle Mare along the coastal strip. The beach itself is wide and sandy, giving you room to rig and launch without fighting for space. Parking along the coastal road is uncomplicated. The wind driving everything here is the SE trade wind, side-onshore for the east-facing beach. The usable kite window runs from north around to roughly southeast — 0° to 140° — which means the trade wind's typical direction sits comfortably within that arc. Expect 15–25 knots through the main season, steady enough to plan sessions around rather than just hope for. Water character varies across the lagoon. Close to the beach, the bottom is sandy and visibility typically excellent — forgiving if you're drilling moves or building confidence on landings. Further out, where the reef starts to shape the incoming swell, there's enough texture for bump-and-jump. Freestyle, freeride, and bump-and-jump are all at home here, making it a spot that accommodates the same quiver across different sessions. For skill level, the side-onshore angle and sandy-bottom lagoon make this approachable for intermediates building their first unhooked moves or working on technique. On stronger days, experienced riders will find the space and chop to push things further. Best season is May through November, when the SE trade wind is at its most consistent. Outside that window, conditions become less predictable. On the beach, Beach Rouge and the restaurant at Amari by Vineet (the LUX* Belle Mare property) are both within 300m — practical for a post-session meal without going far. For accommodation, Akuvara Villa is around 545m from the water, Crystals Beach Resort Belle Mare sits under two kilometres away, and Ambre Resort & Spa is a couple of kilometres up the coast. Belle Plage Villas is an option for those wanting something further along the lagoon. The reef that makes this lagoon so rideable also demands respect. Know where the reef line sits before you push out, and factor in tide changes — depth over the reef shifts as the tide moves.
