About La Preneuse

La Preneuse is a west-facing beach in Mauritius's Black River district, sitting on the exposed Indian Ocean side of the island. Forget the picture-perfect lagoons you've seen in the brochures — this stretch of coast faces open water with no barrier reef to filter the ocean's energy. That's both its appeal and its caveat. The beach sits along the main coastal road through Black River, making it easy to find. Parking is available near the waterfront and the launch area is a sandy beach with a direct run out to the water. The setup is uncomplicated; what's less so is everything beyond the shore. Winds from south through west to north — the full back half of the compass — all fall inside the usable window, with NW and N considered the best directions for this spot. The west coast picks up angles that the trade-wind-dominant east coast misses, which means La Preneuse can deliver sessions when more popular spots on the other side of the island aren't cooperating. The water character here is honest: exposed ocean, open current, and whatever the Indian Ocean is sending through on the day. There's no reef to slow drift or flatten chop, so conditions are rawer and more variable than Mauritius's sheltered lagoon spots. Current can run strongly; swell pushes through unfiltered. On a powered NW day this can be a serious stretch of water. Beach use is shared. Swimmers, windsurfers, and kiters all work the same stretch, which means spatial pressure is real. Right-of-way discipline isn't optional here — it's a practical requirement for keeping everyone safe in an already demanding environment. The bottom line: experienced riders only, a call grounded in the combination of open-ocean exposure, strong current, and a busy mixed-use beach. For those who fit that profile, the local infrastructure is solid. Four kite schools operate in the area — Born To Kite, Hang Loose Tours Kiteboarding, Ion Club The St. Kitesurf Premium School, and Kite Lagoon Vibes Mauritius — so local knowledge and gear rental are accessible.
