About Le Morne

Le Morne sits on the southwestern tip of Mauritius, at the base of the Le Morne Brabant mountain — a volcanic basalt monolith rising nearly 550 metres from the peninsula and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The kite spot occupies the lagoon on the western flank, sheltered from open Indian Ocean swell by a coral reef that runs parallel to shore. This combination of consistent trade wind, flat water, and one of the most striking backdrops in the sport makes Le Morne a genuine bucket-list destination. Getting there means flying into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on the east coast, then a 1.5 to 2-hour drive southwest on well-maintained roads. A rental car is the only practical option — public transport does not reach the peninsula conveniently. Parking is available on the track running along the western coast close to the kite schools, though the road gets busy during peak season. Arriving early is a good habit. The main launch area is a sandy beach directly fronting the lagoon, positioned in front of Kite Lagoon Le Morne and Sonofkite. The beach is wide enough for comfortable rigging and launching, and kite school staff are typically on hand. The lagoon bottom is sandy and relatively shallow near shore, deepening as you move toward the reef — water starts and falls are forgiving compared to reef-edge spots elsewhere. The SE trade wind defines the experience here. From April through October it blows reliably from the southeast at 15 to 25 knots, arriving side-onshore across the lagoon. This is not a light-wind destination — conditions can pick up quickly, and gusty afternoon sessions are common. Wind typically builds through the morning and peaks in the early to mid afternoon before easing toward sunset. The flat lagoon suits all levels: beginners benefit from the consistent entry conditions and sandy bottom, intermediate riders can build speed and work on tricks across the flat sections, and advanced kiters push out toward the reef where a world-class right-hand wave called One Eye breaks on the outer reef. One Eye has a serious reputation and is strictly for experienced wave riders. The primary hazard is coral. The lagoon edges have shallow reef sections that can cause serious injury in an uncontrolled fall or downwind drift. Stay within the marked riding zones, especially if you are still developing confident downwind control. Swimmers and other water users from the resort beaches share this space — situational awareness matters throughout the session. Facilities are genuinely excellent. Kite Lagoon Le Morne and Sonofkite cover lessons, rental, and storage. The surrounding strip of coast hosts some of the finest resort accommodation in Mauritius: St. Regis Mauritius Resort, Lux*, Dinarobin Hotel & Spa, and Hotel Le Paradis are the headline names, with Les Lataniers, Ma Vie La, and Pik-pik offering alternatives. Embafilao Beach Restaurant handles lunch and sundowners on the beach. It is a well-serviced destination, but expect resort-level pricing throughout.
