About Bucerías

Bucerías occupies the northern end of Banderas Bay on the Nayarit coast of Mexico, and it earns the title of wind capital of the Riviera Nayarit honestly. The bay stretches south in front of you, open and wide, and every afternoon from February through June a thermal NE wind builds out across it with enough consistency to plan your trip around. The wind pattern is classic thermal: quiet in the morning, then the NE kicks in after midday and climbs to 15–30 knots through the afternoon. That progressive build is useful — you can rig without rushing and watch the water before committing. The upper end of that range puts you firmly in intermediate-to-advanced territory, so don't plan around the lighter forecast if you haven't seen the spot before. The beach faces the bay rather than open Pacific, so you're riding chop rather than swell. Short, punchy bay waves rather than long rolling sets — calibrating takes a session or two if you're used to ocean riding. The NE wind angle typically runs cross-to-sideshore across the north-facing beach stretch, which keeps your upwind lane clean. The town is compact and visitor-ready. Beach Please Coffee and Bici Bucerias Café & Bar are close by for the morning calm before the wind arrives. Post-session, Adriano's, La Dolce Vita, and Karen's Place sit within easy reach of the water; Bar 329 handles the sundowner shift; Antojitos Veganos covers plant-based options if you want something lighter. FAMAR is a straightforward option for a quick bite between sessions. For accommodation, Bungalows Arroyo and El Sho keep you close enough to the beach to watch conditions from your room. Bucerías hosts the annual Bucerias International Kite Festival, the kind of event that only happens in towns with a real kite community behind it. If you're there for it, expect a busier beach and more kiters on the water. If you're not, the festival's existence tells you the local knowledge and infrastructure are genuinely there. Gear choice scales with the month. February and March tend to run lighter — a 12m is likely your working kite. By May and June the thermal peaks more often near the top of the window, and a 9m gets more use. Arriving with both is the sensible call for a first visit. Beach access is uncomplicated and the town layout is visitor-friendly. Food, water, and shade are easy to find without walking far. Get to the beach before the afternoon wind and crowd arrive together and you'll have more room to rig and a cleaner launch.
