Cozumel sits 70 kilometres south of Cancún in the Caribbean Sea — a Mexican island better known for world-class scuba diving than kite sessions. That reputation undersells it for riders who know where to look. The action happens on the western, leeward side, where the coastline catches the northeast trade winds at a side-onshore angle and the water flattens out behind the reef into something resembling a lagoon. Turquoise, calm, warm — it's the kind of flat water that makes you wish you'd brought a smaller kite. Getting here means a ferry from the Mexican mainland. Cozumel is an island, so that's the practical route in, and services run often enough through the day that you can time your crossing around the forecast rather than the other way around. Once on the western shore, sandy beach stretches give you space to rig and lay lines without much drama, though the beach can narrow depending on the tide and the specific section you choose. The wind is seasonal and driven by the northeast trades — steady in character on good days, but not guaranteed year-round. November through April is the window, with 15 to 22 knots the typical range when it's on. The usable kite arc runs from northwest all the way around to southeast, putting true northerlies and northeasters squarely in play. When the trades are firing, the angle gives you a side-onshore launch with solid upwind margin to work with. On the water, the western lagoon rewards freestyle and freeride riders looking for flat-water carving. The reef context means staying aware of your position relative to the shallows — this is not the place to drift downwind without knowing what's underneath you. Know your boundaries, pick a line that keeps you in safe water, and treat self-rescue as a firm skill requirement rather than a theoretical one.
